THE SHELDON TO SHOWCHASE WORKS OF NATIONAL ARTISTS

Lincoln, NE – Oct. 17, 2005 – The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery will host an invitational exhibition featuring works by nine contemporary American artists beginning November 12 through February 12, 2006.

Titled “Singular Expressions: A Sheldon Invitational,” the exhibition will feature three or more pieces by each of the participating artists, David Bates, Jim Campbell, Amy Cutler, Kojo Griffin, Susan Hauptman, John Newman, Thomas Nozkowski, Lari Pittman and Jeanne Silverthorne. The Sheldon invited these mid-career artists to participate because their diverse works fit within the scope the Museum’s permanent collection.

A symposium, featuring art critic Eleanor Heartney and participating artists Kojo Griffin, John Newman and Thomas Nozkowski, is scheduled November 18 and 19. Visitors may register to attend the symposium by calling the Sheldon, (402) 472-2463. The deadline to register is November 11.

This invitational exhibition renews a tradition started in 1888 by the Haydon Art Club, the predecessor of today’s Nebraska Art Association (NAA). The purposes were to bring outstanding art to Nebraska and to acquire pieces for the permanent collection. The NAA held Invitationals until the early 1960s, acquiring signature pieces from artists including Edward Hopper, Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning.

Janice Driesbach, director of the Sheldon, said, “Singular Expressions is an initiative designed to revive the spirit of the annual invitational exhibitions from years past. We have assembled an impressive group of artists who have significant exhibition records and whose work would enhance our collections. This exhibition represents an outstanding opportunity for those interested in contemporary art to view the work of these artists firsthand.”

The Philip Johnson-designed Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery houses a permanent collection of more than 13,000 objects focusing on American art. The Museum, located at 12th and R streets on the campus of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday.
